There are many advantages with doing internet marketing that conventional offline marketing doesn’t offer. Now in my opinion the smart thing to do is to have a combination of both an online and offline marketing campaign. TV, print, radio and other offline marketing tactics can be effective but expensive and not so easy to track results. Putting marketing dollars in a effective online campaign that is also budget friendly is what small businesses should go for. Below are just a few benefits of marketing online.

Cost: The cost of marketing on the net compared to other traditional methods is really no comparison at all. Though some SEO/Search Marketing Companies do charge an arm and two legs for their services. Some MAY be worth it, in my opinion that is a small minority while the others are just thieves. But overall, online marketing is effective because some of the methods used to get results cost nothing or not much and in some cases the only investment is getting the proper knowledge and time.

Instant Tracking: The ability to track a marketing campaign in real time is a beautiful thing. Having to wait a month or more to find out if something is working is not efficient. Online analytics give you the opportunity to find out what’s working and if it’s not the chance to scrap it and keep it moving to something else that will.

Flexibility: Unlike offline marketing, internet marketing allows you to make changes to an advertising campaign whether it’s the wording or graphics without having to wait for that campaign to expire.

Targeted Demographs: Web marketing gives you the chance to target a specific demograph whether it be location, age, occupation, etc.

Diversity Of Marketing Methods: Online marketing has variety of different ways to advertise, with the ability to track and adjust.

Social Network Sites – Let’s you build your online image and trust with potential clients. Good way to drive traffic back to your site.

Email – Allows you to continue to get your message to those who have already become a client and also for potential clients, a good way to up sell other products and services you may have. Very effective if done correctly.

Blogging – Gives you the opportunity to have direct communication, let people know about the latest updates with your business and is also a good way to get traffic. A blog serves many purposes and is very effective as a marketing tool.

Video – Video gives you the chance to go viral, going viral can get you huge amounts of traffic. Search engines love video, they rank well in the search engine results pages. Should be a part of any marketing plan.

Other tactics include article marketing, social bookmarking, rss submissions, web directory submission, podcast, online classifieds and many others. Internet marketing gives you numerous outlets to build your online brand and offer your products or services.

Should you stop your offline marketing and focus solely on online? Absolutely not, that being stated, a large amount of your marketing budget should be put towards an internet marketing campaign.

She is asking everyone, starting now to make at least 1 green change a month until Earth Day which is April 22nd.

Hip Mountain Mama | One Small Change, if you want full details, but here is the just of it, taken from her blog.

“How does it work? On January first (or soon after) you will decide on what change you want to make for that month and blog about it. For the entire month you will be conscious of this decision and follow through with what you decided on. Then on Feb. 1 you will write another blog post explaining how the month went with your new green change and also write about what you will change for that month. You will do the same on March 1st and April 1st, then will have one final post on April 22nd listing all the changes you made and the differences it made in your life.

What if I don’t have a blog? I would suggest setting up a blog with Blogger. It is free and it is easy! We strongly encourage everyone to blog about this so we can all share with the world ways that we are making a difference and hopefully inspire others. However, if you do not want to start a blog, we still want you to participate. Simply email us at suzy@hipmountainmama.com with your progress (you will still need to comment to this post in order to sign up).”

Now I’m not nor have I ever been consciously “Green” in any shape or form. This is very much new to me, but there is no better time to do something positive than the present. Now my first month or two might be baby steps, but we all have to start somewhere right? So for this month I will do the following things:

Unplug all unused appliances, sounds easy enough to do, but for me will take some discipline.

In a effort to reduce water use I will cut those long showers down to about 7 minutes, this will also take some effort.

I will also start washing in cold water more often and hang dry after.

Now I know this is not some major save the world actions, but it’s a start.

Are you up for the GO GREEN CHALLENGE?

More and more small businesses are marketing online than ever before and rightly so. For one, you don’t have to have the big bank that big companies have to compete. Traditional marketing like TV advertising, radio, print can be very effective, but also very expensive and in some instances not as targeted or have the ROI of online marketing. When your ready to step into the online arena, below are a few things that I would do when starting a online marketing campaign.

So your a local business, you have a website that looks good and that is search engine optimized, now what? Submit your site to the major local search engines, Google Local, Yahoo Local and Bing Local. This is important because most of your traffic will be driven by local search.

Submit or claim your business listing on sites like Yelp, InfoUSA and Superpages. These sites are not only good for some traffic but also citations from these sites can help your local rankings within the Google, Yahoo and Bing’s “local pack {see below}.” These listings show up for certain search keywords. Remember to use your keywords in your title of your listing and submit to the proper category.

Submit your site industry related directories and also quality web directories like DMOZ, Pegasus and others. Web directory submission does take some time to take affect, but inclusion into some of the better directories can be beneficial to your site’s ranking.

Social media is the thing to do right now, and for no other reason is that it can be very effective if done correctly. In my opinion it’s all about building connections and trust. Nobody likes being sold to, doesn’t matter if your on Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn. There is a time and season for everything, when using social networks you have to know the right time to push what your offering and when just to socialize. These are great places to network and build your online brand and should be a part of your marketing plans.

These are a few of the many things I would do when starting to market online. All can and will be of worth and help build your local online presence if done correctly. Online marketing can be a beautiful thing for small and medium sized businesses with the proper knowledge and approach.
